Nicole Forrester, Yanbu Beach, Saudi Arabia. , 2026
Swimming in the Red Sea, the beach is a very popular destination for evening picnics, for families and friends. As the burning sun falls beyond the horizon, the temperature drops slightly and the cool, offshore breeze from over the Red Sea is welcomed by the visitors parking on the sandy shore. We were wild camping on Yanbu beach and of course I had my camera in hand. A group of ladies with their children were parked nearby and they offered me some dates and a glass of Arabic tea, called ‘shay’, which is a hot, fragrant beverage ‘ a vital symbol of hospitality. In return, I offered to photograph their children and then one lovely lady asked if I would take a photograph of her walking away from me. This image is very poignant for me as it depicts the deep patriarchal roots and traditional expectations of obedience to male family members in the Middle East. In Saudi Arabia, new legal reforms are giving women more personal and professional freedom.
