Nicole Forrester, The Sudd. South Sudan, 2022
Elderly Dinka men act as community leaders, spiritual guides, and conflict mediators. In the Sudd wetland region, they preserve vital cultural traditions, oversee seasonal cattle camp movements, and pass down ancestral wisdom. I noticed that some of the more permanent Dinka fishing camps house multiple generations, from the elderly to young children. The elders often watching over the children whilst their fathers are away fishing and their mothers are cleaning the camp or preparing meals. When grazing gets sparce on the mainland, cattle are brought into the Sudd by barge to feed on the reeds. Cattle are the wealth of the Dinka people and generally belong to the older generation and the grandfathers oversea the care of their prized animals.
