Squid in the Shallows

£500.00

Nicole Forrester, The Red Sea, Saudi Arabia, 2026

The Red Sea is home to a variety of squid, most notably the bigfin reef squid, which inhabits shallow coral reefs. This alien-looking, streamlined creature with intricate body markings and the most striking eyes, glided through the water above the sandy seabed, just before I surfaced from a dive. Of course I extended my dive for a while longer in order to capture an image of this amazing creature. Squid use special skin cells called chromatophores to shift colours rapidly for communication or camouflage. They have the largest eyes in the entire animal kingdom, with photoreceptors at the front of the eye, which allows them to see in dimly lit ocean waters and detect bioluminescence.

Medium/Process: Giclee, Paper: Hahnemühle Pearl, Archival mounting, Substrate: Dibond, Subframe

Dimensions: 23.6” x 15.7” (60cm x 40cm)

Edition: 1 of 25
