Nicole Forrester, The Red Sea, Egypt, 2024
Giant fan corals are large colonial soft corals forming flat, lacy webs up to a meter wide. Thousands of tiny polyps on a flexible protein-based skeleton called gorgonin, create this striking, vibrant, crimson coral with its intricate branching structure. Fan corals are usually seen on deep reef walls where constant strong currents bring food and clear away waste. They provide safe hiding places for small fish and other tiny sea creatures. Capturing this image proved challenging in the strong current and I finned back against the flow a number of times to re-take the photo, resulting in my dive buddy returning to check I was okay. I think the figure of the diver in the background is an added element to the image, showing how humans can observe and appreciate the marine environment without harming it.
Medium/Process: C-Type Printing, Paper: Fuji Matt, Archival mounting, Substrate: Acrylic Reverse, Dibond backing, Subframe
Dimensions: 50” x 40” (127cm x 101.6cm)
Edition: 2 of 25
